Kirk’s 1890 Ice Cream Parlor

Kirk’s 1890 Ice Cream Parlor has been serving the locals and visitors in Myrtle Beach with delicious ice cream since 1970. By the 1980s, the success of Kirk’s prompted the owner to open a new store, just a few yards away on the same street. Both stores have remained very popular over the years. Apart from selling tasty ice cream, frozen desserts, and shakes, these stores are located just a couple of blocks from the beach. When the sun starts beating down on a hot day, you can quickly just pop by Kirk’s for your ice-cream fix.

The “1890” in the name of this ice-cream shop refers to its retro theme and décor, which include soda fountain chairs, coin-operated arcade games, and old photos. Patrons can view over 40 flavors of ice cream in a long display case, and can also sample a few flavors if they want. Apart from traditional flavors, Kirk’s also offers a range of more exciting options, such as Birthday Cake and Cookies and Cream. You can enjoy your ice cream in a cup, a cone, or a freshly made waffle cone, and can top it off with marshmallows, hot fudge, or hot caramel.

Mad Myrtle’s Ice Creamery

Mad Myrtle’s Ice Creamery, located on the historic Ocean Boulevard in the heart of Myrtle Beach, is another legendary mainstay of the area. This quaint locally owned joint boasts fun decor, such as vintage skateboard and Coca-Cola collections, and black and white photos of Myrtle Beach in the old days. Offering a few retro-looking tables and chairs, Mad Myrtle’s is also one of only a few sit-down ice-cream parlors in the vicinity.

Patrons can select their ice-cream flavors from two quaint display cases in the front. Available flavors include mouthwatering options such as Strawberry Cheesecake, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. In addition, Mad Myrtle’s offers a choice of four cones, and a variety of toppings, such as pop rocks and rainbow sprinkles. Other menu items include smoothies, homemade jumbo pretzels, funnel cakes, banana splits, and milkshakes.

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream

For ice cream that’s a bit different, drop by Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream. Owner Jerry, who has a background in chemistry, wanted to bring some innovation to the frozen dessert industry. He came up with a plan to freeze ice cream by using liquid nitrogen, which means that a Sub Zero ice cream store requires no freezers.

Customers create their own custom mixes from a variety of cream bases and mix-ins, resulting in a wide variety of different flavor combinations. Think black raspberry and coconut with mixed berries, or caramel Amaretto with brownies. Once a customer has selected their custom mix, it is then flash-frozen in front of them with liquid nitrogen.
