When summers are on your doorstep, you don’t need a reason to try refreshing and chilled recipes. The same applies to me. That’s why this time I brought to you a cool yet easy to make the recipe for watermelon sorbet. Watermelon sorbet is a vegan and gluten-free recipe made with frozen watermelon by adding some mint leaves, lemon and sugar. Classically this looks like an ice cream scoop but this recipe is easy to make which means watermelon sorbet without using any ice cream maker or blender so it’s different.

But when you combine the sweetness of watermelon with a hint of lemon and mint, it’ll be a divine sorbet.

Watermelon is easily available everywhere and a fruit that is recognised by everyone. So I suppose I don’t need to tell you where to find it or get it, but, in case it’s hard to get in your country, you can replace it with frozen watermelons.

What is Sorbet?

Sorbet is a frozen recipe containing just fruits and sugar or any other flavouring substance but not dairy.

Please don’t confuse yourself with sherbets which are different and contain little dairy. It’s somewhere between sorbets and ice creams. Gluten-free and paleo but not vegan.

Ingredients Required for Watermelon Sorbet

  • Watermelon or Frozen Watermelon – I cannot emphasize the health benefits of watermelon and its super cool fruit for summer heatwaves. You know that it’s high in water content and our body is 70% water so we need more and more during summers.
  • Black Rock Salt – Why I didn’t use regular salt? We (Indians) mostly use black salt in fruits instead of regular salt because it has antioxidant properties with low sodium levels than regular salt and also contains other beneficial nutrients like iron, calcium and magnesium. But you can use regular salt as well. Now, what if you want to completely remove the salt? Please try not to do it because it enhances the flavour of this sorbet. You know, sour and sweet effect.
  • Lime Juice – I can’t imagine a refreshing drink without lime juice or lemon juice. Yes, you can use lemon juice as well. It gives tanginess to the drink. Also, a source of Vitamin C.
  • Mint Leaves – Of course, another lifesaver in summers and who doesn’t like mint?
  • Maple Syrup – You can completely remove this if your watermelon is sweet but in my case, it was not so I used maple syrup. You can honey as well. Sugar is not a good option because it’s not liquid. If you want to use any sweetener, opt for liquid ones.
  • Orange Juice – Or any of your favourite juice.

How to Make Recipe for Watermelon Sorbet?

Freezing Watermelon

  1. Cut watermelon into chunks.
  2. Place it on a tray and keep it in the freezer for 4-5 hours. (You can also use frozen watermelon chunks.)

Making Watermelon Sorbet (without ice cream maker or blender)

  1. Take out frozen chunks 5 minutes before making the recipe. I used 1 cup of chunks in this recipe.
  2. Sprinkle a pinch of black rock salt to it.
  3. Add 5-6 drops of lime juice and 2-3 sprigs of mint leaves.
  4. Drizzle 1/2 tsp of maple syrup. (You can adjust this as per the sweetness of the watermelon.)
  5. Crush everything well with the help of mortar or blend in a blender or food processor.
Preparing watermelon sorbet
  1. Put crushed chunks in a tall glass.
  2. Fill half of the glass with orange juice.
  3. Watermelon sorbet is ready.


  • You can freeze watermelon chunks in advance to quickly making this recipe.
  • If you don’t like chunky sorbet, you can blend it in a blender or food processor.
  • If you don’t have maple syrup or honey, skip it because you can still give a slight sweetness to the recipe with orange juice.
  • I made this watermelon sorbet recipe without blender but if you want to make scoops of it, blend the recipe in the blender and again freeze for an hour or two. Take out and scoop it. Adding juice is optional in this case.
