Meet Richard Smith, the Man Behind Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream
Customers visiting any of the three Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream locations may be surprised to learn that the man behind the counter could very well be Smitty himself. Richard Smith, affectionately known as Smitty, has been serving up scoops of delicious ice cream for 26 seasons. He started in the ice cream business as a teenager, working at Sundae School in Dennis Port. His passion for ice cream never waned, and he eventually opened his own ice cream shack at Davisville Road and Route 28.
A Legacy of Sweetness and Success
Since its inception in 1992, Smitty’s Ice Cream has grown to three locations, with a dedicated team of high school and college students working alongside Smitty. As a local favorite, the ice cream shop is now welcoming a new generation of ice cream enthusiasts through its doors.
Building Success on Quality and Service
Smitty believes in providing his customers with the best quality ice cream. Good product, fair pricing, exceptional service, friendliness, and cleanliness form the foundation of his business philosophy.
From UPS to Ice Cream Dreams
Before embarking on his ice cream journey, Smitty worked for UPS for nearly a decade. However, his desire for independence led him to pursue his passion for ice cream and establish his own business.
Adapting to Changing Tastes
While people are becoming more health-conscious, New Englanders still hold the crown for consuming the most ice cream per capita. Smitty has noticed a shift towards healthier options, with yogurt gaining popularity. Nevertheless, when people visit the Cape, indulging in ice cream remains a cherished vacation tradition.
Looking Ahead
With 26 seasons under his belt, Smitty plans to continue serving ice cream for another decade. His dedication is unwavering, working from 9 a.m. to 10 or 11 p.m. daily for seven months of the year. His unique lifestyle affords him the luxury of experiencing both Monday morning and Saturday morning vibes every day, depending on the season.
Cherishing Milestones
Reflecting on his journey, Smitty fondly recalls the thrill of starting his business from scratch as a young adult. The challenge of navigating the financial aspects and administrative duties alongside scooping ice cream taught him valuable lessons.
Embracing the Challenges and Joys of Cape Cod Life
Balancing Costs and Quality
Operating a business on Cape Cod presents its own set of challenges. Smitty emphasizes the importance of finding a reasonable price for his ice cream in order to sustain his business. With high seasonal rent expenses, generating enough revenue to cover staff wages and personal expenses is crucial.
The Cape Cod Advantage
Despite the challenges, Smitty appreciates the perks of having a business on Cape Cod. Having winters off, being his own boss, and witnessing customers returning year after year for their summer ice cream fix are among his favorite aspects.
