July is National Ice Cream Month, so it’s only right that we tell you all about the coolest spots around town to get scoops.

In the sweltering summer heat, we all look for ways to cool off. You can do just that by tasting a few of the extraordinary flavors offered at these local ice cream shops.

Detroit Water Ice Factory1014 Woodward Ave.

This one-of-a-kind ice cream shop is located in the heart of downtown Detroit, adjacent to the One Campus Martius Building. It was created by journalist, and author, Mitch Albom. This isn’t like your normal Italian ice or shaved ice experience. The water ice isn’t runny or flavorless. It’s actually just the opposite. You can even add ice cream to your water ice. Now that’s a twist!

{Speaking of twists} You can experience one of their hottest items of the summer – “Motown Twist,” which is a blend of delicious soft serve ice cream (chocolate and vanilla twist) atop your choice of water ice. This ice cream shop advertises that their scoops are “fruity like sorbet” and creamy like ice cream.

All profits from Detroit Water Ice Factory are used to help the city of Detroit through S.A.Y. (Super All Year) Detroit, Albom’s non-profit organization. One of the store’s slogans is “There’s no calories in doing good.”

Mootown Ice Cream Shoppe2461 Russell St.

This family-owned shop serves over 12 flavors of Michigan-made Hudsonville ice cream in the heart of Eastern Market. Cool down with their refreshing Faygo Rock & Rye or Red Pop-flavored slushies! Mootown specializes in their decadent ice cream sundaes such as their classic, “Banana Split,” and “Double Decker,” which is a mixture of brownie, Snickers, hot fudge, nuts and whipped cream.

Treat Dreams4160 Cass Ave.

This is a familiar name in Detroit. Treat Dreams has been serving ice cream since 2010. They are the go to ice cream shop in the Midtown area. They have made over 1,000 flavors since their opening and constantly switch up the flavors every week.

Treat Dreams’ July Flavor of the Month is called the “Uncle Sam,” which is a Neapolitan style ice cream in red, white and blue. Treat Dreams also offers vegan flavored ice cream such as chocolate raspberry merlot and the popular Swedish Fish flavor.

Their current flavors are listed on the Treat Dreams Midtown Facebook page and updated every Sunday.

Cold Truth1464 Gratiot

This pop up ice cream shop serves customers in the alley behind Trinosophes at Eastern Market. Customers appreciate the authenticity of the homemade ice cream and handmade waffle cones, produced by Reilly Craft Creamery.

You may have tried Reilly Craft Creamery’s homemade ice cream at downtown stores such as Whole Foods and Avalon. Reilly also makes vegan ice cream such as the popular, “Vegan Small Batch Strawberry.” One of their unique flavors is the “Handsteeped Coffee” ice cream, which has freshly ground organic coffee beans mixed with organic cream.

Cold Truth is open Saturdays in the summer from Noon – 6:00 p.m. and posts upcoming events and new products on their Instagram page.

Now that we know where to go to get the best scoops in the city, let’s scream for ice cream!
