Make Playdough Ice Cream with our easy 2 ingredient recipe and let kids play. Set up an ice cream shop for added fun and pretend play!

This week it’s all things Ice Cream starting with our recipe for Playdough Ice Cream. I know there are a lot of recipes floating around, but we needed one that is taste safe for my little toddler. We combined two ingredients from our pantry and came up with a wonderful recipe that smells and even tastes good (although it’s not made for eating, it won’t hurt if you try a little). It is so fun to squeeze, shape, and if you flatten it out and then fold it into a ball it looks like ice cream! Cool!

Is Ice Cream Playdough Safe to Eat?

Yes, and no. All the ingredients come from the kitchen and can be eaten-so it is TASTE SAFE. In fact, the ice cream playdough smells so good that we all took a little nibble, and it tastes sweet instead of salty like most homemade playdough recipes. However, raw flour and playdough can harbor bacteria, so it is probably best practice to teach children not to eat playdough. (Not to mention it is full of sugar.)

Be aware of food allergies, and make recipe adjustments as needed.

Ingredients:

  • One can of frosting-We used Pillsbury Pink Lemonade flavor and it smelled divine!
  • 1 1/4 C. flour
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • 1 batch should be plenty for 2 kids

Directions:

1. Stir frosting and flour together, then knead until forms a dough. If it is sticky add a little flour until it no longer sticks to your hand. If it is stiff, add a couple of drops of water until it reaches the right consistency.

I gathered cups, ice cream cones, sprinkles, cookie cutters, and toothpicks, and let the kiddos play and use their imagination.

Little Dragon loved poking things into the Play Dough Ice Cream and decorating his treats.

He couldn’t resist trying a few bites of our sweet smelling play dough, the nice thing is I didn’t have to freak out on him or dig in his mouth. The less interrupting of playtime that I have to do is best.

How to Store Ice Cream Playdough

Ice cream playdough can be stored in an air-tight container for weeks. You can wrap it with plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. I used the frosting containers to store ours in.
