If you are a parent or have cared for kids in some capacity, you are fully aware of the struggles of making them eat vegetables. Getting just one kid to do it is difficult enough; if you have many, they just form a coalition and collectively protest against being served vegetables.
In the end, you probably exhaust yourself trying to think of ways to get some nutrition in their bodies.
We understand your struggle and have always paid extra attention to any brand or product that promises to solve this problem. Unfortunately, most claims are only somewhat effective, which is why we were quite intrigued by Jessica Levison’s Peekaboo Ice Cream.
Who Founded Peekaboo Ice Cream?
In case the name doesn’t ring a bell, Jessica appeared on Episode 8 of the 12th Season of Shark Tank. She had started Peekaboo less than a year prior to appearing on the show and was already making solid sales on it. What really intrigued us was her reason for starting it to begin with.
Jessica is a mom and she shares the parental struggles of getting her children to consume vegetables. That alone gave her a solid start as far as we are concerned. No one can understand that struggle better than a parent.
For understandable reasons, we were as confused as the Sharks when Jessica initially pitched her product. Peekaboo Ice Creams combines the tastefulness of ice creams with the nutrition of vegetables. You read that correctly. There are actual vegetables in the ice cream! That was quite the shocker.
The kicker was that her product was that the initial blind taste test for the product got positive feedback, and it was also seeing impressive sales. As skeptical as we were about the idea, both these events did suggest it wasn’t as unappetizing as it seems.
By the time she had described her story and product, we were hooked!
Jessica made an ambitious offer to the Sharks, especially considering her business was not even a year old at that point. She was asking for $800,000 for an 8% share in her business. She claimed her business was valued at $10 million, which the Sharks struggled to believe, even though she had managed to earn $450,000 in revenue.
Most Sharks opted out while Lori made the offer of lending her the money at a 6% interest rate over 3 years against a 5% stake in the company. Kevin O’Leary also reconsidered and offered a similar offer for a 9% stake in the company, but Jessica refused both offers respectfully.
In a later interview, Jessica mentioned that while she was ecstatic about getting the opportunity to present her business idea in front of the Sharks, she was not looking for a loan. She believed in her business idea and wanted to continue progressing with it without the liability.
Our Review of Peekaboo Ice Cream
Although she walked out without a deal, her presentation managed to convince her to give her product a try to judge for ourselves if it was worth the hype. Before we go to the experience, however, we want to first mention the story behind the brand.
Peekaboo Ice Cream is a personification of maternal love and the strength of this bond is a key driver of its success. It is clear from every aspect of the product that Jessica has paid careful attention to the minutest of details. From determining the flavors to the packaging design, everything looks perfect.
Her products are organic, gluten-free, and a rich source of nutrients like Calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, and Phosphorus. Below are some of the most successful flavors at our household from Peekaboo’s current offering:
- Strawberry with Hidden Carrot
- Cotton Candy with Hidden Beet
- Chocolate with Hidden Cauliflower
You can check out their complete collection by visiting their online shop.
If we sum up the experience, the pros and cons would be as follows.
- Peekaboo ice creams are creamy, sweet, and delicious.
- Kids love the flavors.
- They are packed with nutrition and a flavorful treat.
- Vegetables are not noticeable in terms of taste.
- They are organic and gluten-free, making them a safe option.
- They contain less sugar and more nutrients compared to the other options in the market.
They are made using premium products, making them slightly more expensive. Their online delivery charges cause the price to be more than the retail price because it includes the cost of resources to maintain the coolness.
Now, let’s take the more important features one by one.
Cotton Candy and Beet was the flavor we thought would be the most interesting and started with that. The first thing you will notice about the taste is the deep creaminess of the product. There is an amazing balance of sweetness and creaminess that gives the ice cream a luxurious texture.
We got the kids to test it out, and it was an immediate hit!
2. Rich Flavors
Each of the flavors we tried out had an incredible richness to it. We would be lying if we said we weren’t a little skeptical about the Chocolate with Hidden Cauliflower, but it was amazing! The deep richness of the Peruvian chocolate was magical and the flavor was a kid favorite.
We felt similarly about the Strawberry with Carrot flavor, which turned out to be the adult favorite in the house. We loved the balance of sweet and sour flavor of the strawberry softly accentuated with carrot chunks in a way that amplified its tastefulness.
3. Barely Noticeable Vegetables
The vegetables are so surreptitiously concealed in the layers of flavor that their taste gets concealed easily. The kids did not notice them in any of the flavors, and even we struggled to find them sometimes while trying it out.
4. Nutritional Qualities and Organic
Each product is packed with nutrients, and the ice creams are a good source of Calcium, Riboflavin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Phosphorus. They are also organic, taking away the chances of harmful GMOs becoming a part of your kids’ systems.
The best part is that you don’t even have to get creative about getting your kids to eat it because they will come in asking for seconds anyway.
Are there Alternatives Available?
We tried to look for possible alternatives to the product; however, there is nothing that has the same offering. At best, the healthier options in ice creams target the sugar levels, but no brand has tried creating a product that tries to overcome the barrier of children’s dislike for healthier food options.
Our Final Thoughts
Generally, we were happy with our experience of Peekaboo Ice Creams. They are creamy, nutritional, organic, and very delicious! We recommend trying them out; see how your kids like them.
