Hi there and happy Friday! This is Troy, Artist of Awesomeness for The Plant Kids.
Before I was vegan, I used to get dairy ice cream. Then, I went vegan, and I was worried I could not eat it anymore. Luckily, lots of new companies started making vegan ice cream and I was so happy! One vegan ice cream company is Oatly, and I am going to be reviewing their mint chip vegan ice cream flavor.
Oatly was founded in the 1990’s. They are a US and Swedish company. They make plant-based ice cream, oat milk, and oat yogurt. A fact about Oatly is that it started with a group of scientists. They looked at all the nutrition of oats. They thought, why do you need a cow to make ice cream, yogurt, and milk? Then Oatly was created! Since Oatly was founded, they hired a CEO and a President. The CEO is from Sweden. His name is Toni Peterson and the President of the North American division is Mike Messersmith.
Even though the background of Oatly is interesting, I am going to get right into what you are here for- my review of the mint chip ice cream flavor! The mint chip Oatly ice cream has many things I like about it. It has a good minty flavor. I think Oatly does an incredibly good job of making their ice cream taste super minty. Sometimes other mint flavored ice creams taste like vanilla.
Other vegan ice cream flavors often claim to have chocolate chunks, but they end up being small. The Oatly mint chip ice cream has chocolate pieces in every bite! I also appreciate that it is vegan, non-GMO, and the container is recyclable.
Another thing about the ice cream is that it is delicious. Oatly did an awesome job of making their mint chip ice cream taste fantastic. I also thought the texture was fabulous. In my opinion, mint flavored ice cream should be white. Some other versions of mint ice cream are green which means they added fake colors. Oatly adds no artificial colors, and it still looks and tastes amazing.
Those are the major pros of this flavor. Here are a few cons to consider. First, it is not organic. The Oatly website said that if they wanted to make their ice cream non-GMO and organic, it would be awfully expensive. Therefore, they chose to make it non-organic. Also, it contains salt, sugar, and has some saturated fat. To be fair, most ice creams (vegan or non-vegan) contain saturated fat. It is important to note that just because this ice cream does not contain dairy, it still has saturated fat. The only other con I could think of is that it was somewhat hard to scoop out. Since there are so many chocolate pieces, it can make serving it a little difficult.
After doing lots of research, and sampling the ice cream, I have decided to recommend the Oatly mint chip flavor. It tastes great and big chocolate chunks. I asked both of my siblings and they said they also think it is awesome. If you are going to try this ice cream, I would recommend serving it in a vegan waffle cone. Enjoy!
