Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…

I’ll admit it. I’m no longer a youngster. In fact, I’m getting “up there” in years.

I know, it’s hard to believe, right? That’s not so terrible, really…

But I’d like to tell you about when I WAS a youngster.

Our yearly family reunion was held in a little community center in the small Missouri town where my parents were born and raised.

The family gathered to reacquaint themselves with one another, introduce new members, talk, play, and have fun together.

Everyone brought a dish or two, we had tea and Kool-Aid and looked forward to dessert.

ONE SPECIAL DESSERT

It was Uncle Paul’s homemade ice cream.

Start with any other dessert that was there, like a brownie or blackberry pie or our family’s favorite Best Raw Apple Cake.

Top it with Uncle Paul’s homemade ice cream and you had a masterpiece of deliciousness.

Do you know how some people wait until their food has settled before getting dessert?

Well, that didn’t happen. No waiting, it could be all gone in a snap! And who would want to miss out on that?

A DELICIOUS TRADITION

I don’t know when his tradition began, but Uncle Paul’s freezer of homemade ice cream appeared with him at every event I can remember. And it still does today, many years later.

Our family reunions, Christmas celebrations, our Fall Wing-Ding (I’ll explain the Wing-Ding another time….), birthdays, and most recently, to our niece’s high school graduation party.

For at least the past 50 years that I’ve been included and aware, we have come to expect homemade ice cream when we see Uncle Paul.

I’m not sure how we would react if he showed up someplace empty-handed!

The homemade ice cream tradition is a sweet memory our family will always share – along with the love of this sweet treat and our sweet uncle!

Memories can be in the form of ice cream or any other gesture you take the time and effort to put into practice.

This is MY homemade ice cream recipe. If you don’t have an ice cream freezer, here is a great one for a decent price.

If you’d like to try your hand at old-fashioned cranking the handle for ice cream, here is an ice cream maker that has the option to power by electricity or by hand.

That actually sounds fun to try again – it’s been a long time since I made ice cream this way!

Truth be told, Uncle Paul’s recipe is probably my REAL favorite.

Since I don’t have his recipe (he has not yet given it up or shown any intention of passing on his secrets), here’s my favorite of Kimberly’s Ice Cream Recipes…

NOT YOUR UNCLE PAUL’S HOMEMADE VANILLA ICE CREAM RECIPE

(There is a printable version at the end of this post.)

This recipe starts small – it makes 1 quart. Increase by doubling or tripling the ingredients for the proper amount you wish to make.

• 2 cups of heavy cream
• 2 cups of whole milk
• 3/4 cups of sugar
• 2 Tbls. vanilla extract
• Pinch of salt

Instructions:

Mix ingredients and pour into an ice cream freezer container.

Process recipe according to freezer directions.

Additions can be made to this recipe: add fruit, chocolate, chocolate chips, or nuts as desired.

Yield: 1 quart

Make ahead and put into the freezer for a more solid, but scoopable consistency.

For a larger crowd, the recipe can be multiplied. Fill your freezer as directed in the manufacturer’s instructions.

You can also add other ingredients, this is the basic.

Add chocolate chips, strawberries, pecans, or any other of your favorite flavors.
