Calling all peanut butter chocolate lovers, this ice cream is for you! Moose Tracks ice cream started out at a Michigan ice cream shop back in 1988. It’s made up of creamy vanilla ice cream with peanut butter cups and chocolate fudge swirls. And it’s incredibly delicious!

After perfecting my homemade no churn ice cream recipe back in 2015, I’ve been on a mission to make no churn ice cream in all of my favorite flavors!

This easy ice cream method only requires 4 simple steps, just a few ingredients and only 10 minutes of prep time. And you don’t need an ice cream maker, so literally anyone can make this ice cream at home!

ingredients for homemade moose tracks ice cream

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sea salt
  • Heavy cream
  • Peanut butter cups – for this recipe I used Miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Feel free to use any size or brand of peanut butter cup that you’d like. Since you’re going to chop them up, the size or shape of the cup doesn’t matter!
  • Hot fudge – I like using this easy Smucker’s Microwaveable Hot Fudge because it’s easy to pop it directly in the microwave for 30 seconds, then drizzle it into the ice cream. Once again, feel free to use whatever you have on hand, or your favorite brand of hot fudge!

Step by step instructions

  1. Combine condensed milk, vanilla extract and sea salt in a large bowl, then set aside.
  2. Use a stand mixer, or electric hand mixer, to whip the heavy cream on medium-high speed until form peaks form, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Note: You can also hand whip the heavy cream if you don’t have a mixer at home. This will also provide you with a great arm workout!
  3. Fold the condensed milk mixture into the whipped cream with a rubber spatula until combined. Drizzle in the hot fudge and add the chopped peanut butter cups.
  4. Gently fold the peanut butter cups and fudge into the ice cream. Transfer to a 2 quart, or larger, container to freeze the ice cream. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and place in the freezer for at least 5 hours, or overnight.
    • Note: Be sure not to over-mix the fudge into the ice cream. You don’t want to turn it into chocolate ice cream, you simply want to swirl the fudge into the ice cream.

Whit’s tips and tricks

  • Freezing the ice cream in a metal container will make it freeze faster. If you want your moose tracks ice cream ASAP, pour the ice cream into a metal container to freeze.
  • Place the ice cream as far back in the freezer as you can for a quicker freeze. You never want to store ice cream in the door, as it is the warmest place in the freezer. But I have also found for homemade ice cream, the further back in the freezer you place it, the quicker it will freeze.
  • This recipe makes approximately 1/2 gallon of ice cream, which equals 4 pints, or 12 scoops of ice cream.
  • This ice cream will stay good in the freezer for 6 months. Always seal the ice cream in an airtight container to avoid freezer burn. I like to use these glass containers to store the ice cream. This recipe will perfectly fit into two of these containers.
  • This moose tracks ice cream recipe is gluten free. Just make sure the peanut butter cups you’re using are gluten-free. All Reese’s peanut butter cups, except seasonal shaped items, are gluten-free.
  • Do NOT make substitutions. This recipe works perfectly with the simple combination of heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk. Substituting either of these ingredients can vary the final result of the ice cream taste and texture.
  • Use a wet ice cream scoop to scoop out the ice cream after it’s frozen. I actually learned this trick at my first job, working at a frozen custard shop. A wet ice cream scoop means the ice cream will come out of the scoop and into your bowl much easier!

How to make a chocolate version

Since the original Moose Tracks ice cream was introduced in 1988, several other flavors of the popular ice cream have hit the market. If you’d like to make Chocolate Moose Tracks Ice Cream, I’m here to show you how!

  • Add ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder to the condensed milk, vanilla and salt mixture.
  • Complete the recipe as instructed.

It’s that easy, one simple addition and you’ve got yourself homemade chocolate moose tracks ice cream!

If you want to go all in with the chocolate, you can make Extreme Moose Tracks Ice Cream. Simply use the recipe above to make the chocolate moose tracks ice cream, but instead of peanut butter cups, use fudge-filled cups. I found these Dark Chocolate Filled Hershey’s Kisses, which would be perfect for this recipe!
