The Yay Labs Ice Cream Ball: Homemade Ice Cream with a Twist!
When I received the Yay Labs Ice Cream Ball to review, I knew it was going to be a hit with my family. Unlike the cloth diapers I usually write about, this product offers a different kind of excitement – the opportunity to make ice cream! My kids were overjoyed.
Naturally, they had a few questions:
- How does this work?
- Why do we need salt? We don’t want salt-flavored ice cream!
- Can we kick it?
- Can we play basketball with it?
- When can we eat it?
With a quick trip to the store to buy some rock salt (also known as ice cream salt) and heavy whipping cream, we were ready to get started.
TIP: Remember, although the Yay Labs Ice Cream Ball is durable, it’s not designed to be dropped or thrown onto hard surfaces. It’s meant to be rolled, spun, and shaken. If you’re into Crossfit, you might even use it as a unique exercise tool before indulging in your homemade ice cream!
How to Make Homemade Ice Cream
The Ice Cream Ball consists of two sides: one for ice and salt, and the other for the ice cream ingredients. To begin, load one side of the ball with ice and rock salt. Don’t worry if you can’t find ice cream salt at your local grocery store – you can easily find it on Amazon.
Next, add your ice cream ingredients to the other side. For a classic vanilla ice cream, you’ll need:
- 1 pint of whipping cream
- 1/3 cup + 2 tbsp of sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp of Vanilla Extract
Then, it’s time to have some fun! Vigorously play with the ball for approximately 20 minutes. While it may seem like a long time, trust me, it’s worth it. We once cut the time short by a few minutes and the ice cream turned out softer, similar to a Wendy’s Frosty. So, I recommend sticking to a minimum of 20 minutes. The length of time can vary depending on the recipe and ingredients used. Some low-fat versions may take longer.
If you’re in the mood for something different, try a frozen yogurt recipe. You’ll need:
- 1 pint of Vanilla or Fruit Flavored Stonyfield Yogurt
- Optional: Add 1/3 cup of sugar, honey, or additional fruit for added flavor
Our family found the Yay Labs Ice Cream Ball super easy to use. With just a few ingredients and a bit of time, your kids can actively participate in making their very own dessert. In fact, my 12-year-old daughter has been showing off the ball to her friends. She adds the salt, ice, and ingredients, and before I know it, they’re in her room making ice cream together!
The Yay Labs Ice Cream Ball is available for purchase directly from their website or through Amazon.
So, what do you think? Wouldn’t it be fun for your family to have one of these balls and create your own tasty ice cream treats at home?
