Ice cream is always a hit with the kids, and while I’m not about to pass out fresh scoops in the middle of a school day, a lesson incorporating everyone’s favorite cool treat is guaranteed to go over well – so it was a no-brainer picking I is for Ice Cream as this week’s Kindergarten Letter Craft!

My kids love ice cream, so it was obvious to choose I is for Ice Cream as the Letter I Craft for this week

We have previously done a few different ice cream activities (like our easy ice cream play dough invitation or our edible ice cream play dough) so I knew that I is for Ice Cream would be popular, and I loved that we could cover both the upper and lowercase versions of the letter with the same basic craft.

I also really wanted to incorporate watercolor painting as an opportunity to give the children a different material to work with that creates beautiful results.

Because you’re going to want the paint to dry before putting together the final ice cream cone craft, this craft is great for spreading out amongst two days where you don’t have a lot of time for crafting, or for starting in the morning and wrapping up later that day.

Be sure to prepare an area for the scoops to dry and have the kids write their names on the backs of their scoops before they get started!

Letter I Craft – I is for Ice Cream Craft

To start, first gather your materials:

  • Brown construction paper or cardstock
  • White cardstock or watercolor paper
  • Paintbrushes
  • Watercolors
  • Pink or red pom poms (for cherries)
  • Markers
  • Water
  • Paper towels or rags
  • Scissors (for the parent or teacher)

Using the scissors, prepare the shapes needed for making your letter I craft – each child will need:

  • 2 brown triangle “cones”
  • 2 ice cream scoops

First, you’re just going to provide the children with the watercolors, water, paper towel, paint brushes, and paper scoop pieces. Take care to show the children how to clean their brush properly in between colors and adequately “wet” their paints if they don’t get the opportunity to work with watercolors often.

Have the children paint both of their ice cream scoops to resemble their favorite flavor of ice cream – or make up their own amazing flavors!

Let the watercolors completely dry before proceeding with the rest of the craft.

Have the children build their ice cream cones – attaching one or more scoops to each cone.

For the lower case i ice cream cones, attach a pom pom as a cherry “dot” above the i.

You can either pre-label the scoops or have your children practice writing their letter I/i on the scoops. I labeled the lower case i’s in advance and had the kids practice their upper case I’s on the other cone crafts.
