When I told the kids what the secret ingredient was in this chocolate ice cream recipe, their faces were priceless. Not only were they confused about how I took avocados and turned them into a delicious ice cream mixture, but they were also astonished they couldn’t taste the avocado one bit.
This treat is now one of the most requested in our house! Since the recipe from start to finish takes just minutes to make, we all love whipping it up and enjoying the creamy texture. Seriously – it’s that good.
While you can easily enjoy this keto ice cream as is, why not pair it up with something low carb treat? This would be delicious with my Keto Flourless Mug Cake or my Sugar Free Cake, too!
The ingredients list is short and simple for this keto ice cream recipe! Once you gather them up, you’re just moments away from taking your first bite.
Avocados – Make sure that they’re ripe and ready to use. You NEED ripe avocados for keto avocado ice cream. (See my tips below on how to tell if an avocado is ripe).
Coconut milk – Coconut milk is a great flavor enhancer and adds a lot of creaminess while keeping the ice cream dairy-free. If you prefer you can use heavy cream instead.
Almond milk – Make sure that you’re using unsweetened almond milk.
Cocoa powder – I also like to use a pinch of cocoa powder. It doesn’t necessarily make it into chocolate ice cream but it does give it a hint of chocolate flavor.
Sweetener – My go-to sweetener for all my sweets is Joy Filled Eats Natural Sweetener. It is a blend of xylitol, erythritol, and stevia that is twice as sweet as augar.
Egg yolks – Save the egg whites for another recipe like my Keto Coconut Bars.
Glycerin – Adding this helps with the texture when you’re freezing and serving.
Vanilla – Adding vanilla extract is always a great flavor booster.
How To Make Keto Avocado Ice Cream
If you’re looking for an easy gluten-free dessert, it doesn’t get much better than this. There is just one simple thing to remember in the instructions below – just two easy steps!
Step One: Put all the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Step Two: Pour into an ice cream maker – it will be thick – and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Right out of the ice cream machine this is like soft serve. For a firmer ice cream put it into a freezer-safe container and freeze for 3-4 hours before enjoying.
Expert Tip: Too impatient to wait for it to churn? Enjoy as a pudding right after blending!
Dark chocolate chip morsels – You can always add sugar free chocolate chips during the last minute or two of churning time or sprinkle some on the top. Semi-sweet and white chocolate chips would be stellar, too.
Chocolate syrup – Love the idea of making a super chocolatey chocolate avocado ice cream? Just stir in some keto sugar free chocolate syrup and make it happen.
Toppings – Don’t forget to add whatever toppings that you’d like! Fresh fruit or even a sprinkle of unsweetened coconut flakes are great options. Just pick toppings that go with your line of eating and you’ll be good to go.
How do I know when an avocado is ripe?
Since this recipe calls for ripe avocados, it’s important to pick ones that are ready to go! The squeeze test is always a good indicator. Once you pick up an avocado, give it a gentle squeeze. If it’s rock hard, it’s not ripe – at all. If there is a little give, that is your clue that the avocado is ripe and ready.
What does glycerin do when added to this recipe?
The addition of the glycerin is mainly to help it stay scoopable once it’s frozen. If you omit it, the ice cream is going to get rock hard and you’ll have to let it thaw for quite some time before being able to scoop it out.
Do I need an ice cream maker to make keto avocado ice cream?
Yes. If you want to make this a no churn ice cream recipe you can try freezing the avocado first and then blending it with the other ingredients. For that method, a food processor works better than a blender.
Can I make popsicles with this recipe?
You can! Just get some popsicle molds and make sure that you freeze for several hours before trying to remove them from the molds. This would be a really great summertime treat for the kids and a way to add some healthy nutrients and nutrition, too! (You don’t even have to tell them that there are avocados in this ice cream. See if they even know they’re there!)
