Components of Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
Ice Cream Cones
To make these delectable cupcakes, you’ll need flat-bottomed ice cream cones, also known as “cake cones.” You can find them in different sizes, but for this recipe, we’ll stick to the standard cone. It’s important to use the right size to ensure a perfect balance between cake and cone.
When it comes to ice cream cone cupcakes, confetti cake is the epitome of fun! I used one recipe of my Confetti Cupcakes for these cones. The best part about this recipe is its versatility. You can use any flavor cupcake you desire! Whether it’s classic vanilla, rich chocolate, indulgent red velvet, fruity strawberry, or zesty lemon, the choice is yours!
Here are some popular flavors that would be absolutely amazing as ice cream cone cupcakes:
- Vanilla Cupcakes
- Chocolate Cupcakes
- Red Velvet Cupcakes
- Strawberry Cupcakes
- Lemon Cupcakes
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
For the perfect finishing touch, I used my recipe for Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. I tinted the buttercream a vibrant pink using gel food coloring. However, you can get creative and use any kind of frosting you prefer! Here are some of my favorite frosting recipes that would work perfectly for these cupcakes:
- Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
- Lemon Buttercream Frosting
- Shortcut Swiss Meringue Buttercream

How to Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
To make the confetti cupcake batter, simply whisk together the dry ingredients (all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt) in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the room temperature wet ingredients (milk, egg, vegetable oil, sour cream, and vanilla extract). Combine the dry and wet ingredients, stirring until well combined. Don’t forget to add the rainbow sprinkles for that extra burst of color and joy!

Prepare the cupcake pan by placing a large piece of aluminum foil over it. Cut slits into the foil to hold the ice cream cones securely. Portion the cake batter into the ice cream cones and bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes. To check if they’re done, gently touch the top of the cupcakes; they should bounce back or have a clean toothpick when inserted. Allow the cupcakes to cool to room temperature.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
While the cupcakes are baking and cooling, let’s make the delicious vanilla buttercream frosting. Using a stand mixer or electric hand mixer, whip the butter until light, pale, and fluffy. Add powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla extract, and continue mixing. Slowly drizzle in heavy cream and whip for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting becomes smooth and creamy.

Decorating the Cupcakes
It’s time to assemble the cupcakes! Using your favorite piping tip (I used an Ateco 826 tip), pipe the vanilla buttercream frosting onto the cupcakes. Create a swirl that resembles soft serve ice cream, adding a touch of whimsy to your treats. And what’s an ice cream cone cupcake without a generous sprinkle of rainbow-colored joy? Add an abundance of rainbow sprinkles to complete your masterpiece.
Enjoy these adorable and scrumptious ice cream cone cupcakes with family and friends. They are sure to bring smiles and make any occasion extra special. So, get your baking supplies ready and let’s create some memories with these delightful treats!
