Are you tired of the same old cupcakes for your birthday parties and gatherings? Why not try something different and make these delightful ice cream cone cupcakes? Instead of baking them in regular paper cups, bake them right into ice cream cones!
Ice cream cone cupcakes have been around for quite some time, but they are still a rare sight at gatherings. It’s such a fun and creative idea that the whole family, especially the kids, will enjoy. The best part is that you can use any cake or cupcake batter of your choice.
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients and Tools
Before you start making your ice cream cone cupcakes, gather a few ingredients and tools. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Cake batter: Choose your favorite cake batter recipe, whether it’s a homemade one or a box mix. You can experiment with flavors like chocolate, vanilla, or even moist strawberry.
- Frosting: Prepare a generous amount of frosting for about 24 cupcakes. You can use any kind you prefer, or try a homemade buttercream frosting for a delightful taste.
- Sprinkles: While optional, sprinkles add a touch of whimsy to your cupcake cones.
For tools, make sure you have a piping bag with a star tip (such as Wilton 1M), or you can use a plastic bag as a substitute. You’ll also need scissors, a muffin pan or a 13×9-inch baking pan, and a large bowl.
Step 2: Making the Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
Preheat your oven to 350°F (176°C) and position the rack in the middle.
Now, let’s prepare your cake batter. You can follow any cupcake or cake batter recipe you like. Feel free to make it from scratch or opt for a convenient cake mix. If you’re looking for recommendations, I’ve included some delicious recipes above.
Mix your batter in a large bowl or a pitcher, which will make pouring the batter easier later on.
Arrange your cupcake cones in a muffin pan, a 13×9-inch baking pan, or a sheet pan. Personally, I find the baking pan more stable, but a cupcake pan works just fine too.
Using a measuring cup, pour about 3 tablespoons of batter into each cone, filling it just above the ridge/handle part. Be careful not to overfill, as it may overflow while baking. Alternatively, if you mixed the batter in a pitcher, you can pour it directly into the cones. Depending on the consistency of your batter, you can even use a piping bag to pipe the batter into the ice cream cones.
Step 3: Bake and Decorate
Now, place your ice cream cone cupcakes in the oven and bake them for 19 to 22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool completely.
It’s time to decorate! I love using a piping bag fitted with a star tip (like Wilton 1M) to achieve a soft-serve ice cream cone look. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can easily use a plastic storage bag with a corner snipped off.
After frosting the cupcakes, you can leave them as they are or add some delightful sprinkles on top.
TIP: Want to see what the inside looks like? Cut one of the unfrosted cupcakes in half for a delightful surprise!
There you have it! Your ice cream cone cupcakes, or cupcake cones, are now ready to be served and enjoyed.
How Long Do Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes Last?
To keep your cupcakes fresh, store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bring them to the party. You can bake them the night before the event, and they will still taste great the next day. However, keep in mind that over time, the ice cream cones may lose their crispness and become slightly soggy—but that won’t happen until a few days later.
