First, let’s talk about the ingredients you will need to make chocolate covered bananas. The best part is it is such a simple recipe.

Ok, so let’s start with the bananas! You want a big bunch of bananas that are just the way you enjoy them. If you like ones that are greenish because of the flavor, then that is still how they will taste after you freeze them. Bananas that are more ripe, that is more yellow and less green, will be a little sweeter and still taste a little sweeter after they are frozen.

Once they are frozen, you as the maker, will probably still taste the ripe bananas difference. But here is the beauty- your kids won’t! Ha, ha, picky little ones! All frozen bananas have about the same texture! They will never be able to tell them apart, especially once they have no skins and are covered in chocolate!

You are going to peel the bananas. Then cut your bananas in half to keep the frozen banana chocolate pops a manageable size. Cutting them in half helps prevent them from breaking and the curve in the banana is less awkward.

You can feel good about eating bananas because they are filled with health benefits such as helping provide energy and being good for your gut health. Bananas are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants.

You have all sorts of options for making the chocolate coating. You can use various chocolate bars or chocolate chips. I personally like to use dark chocolate chips because they melt quickly and are pure chocolate. If I want to add to the chocolate, I like to do it as a topping sprinkled on top of the chocolate covering.

I use a bit of heat and coconut oil to soften up my chocolate chunks and turn the melted chocolate into a nice smooth chocolate dip which makes for a nice crunchy chocolate shell once frozen.

My favorite kind of chocolate to use is GHIRARDELLI 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Premium Baking Chips. I just love dark chocolate and it is better for you too!

Toppings are 100% optional. If you want to use them, there are two ways to apply them. You can just sprinkle them over the chocolate dipped bananas once they are resting on the parchment paper covered baking tray. Or you can try to roll your chocolate dipped banana in the topping (messier but you get full coverage).

Honestly, I like mine best just as plain frozen chocolate covered banana pops! But, it is always fun to experiment! Some of my favorite toppings to try with my children for fun are granola, mini white chocolate chips, sprinkles, nuts, cereals, coconut flakes, small candies like mini M&Ms, crumbled graham crackers or crumbled OREOs.

With warm weather, it’s always nice to have a refreshing, cold snack on hand. My family loves to have Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas in the freezer to enjoy on a hot summer day. They also love to help me make them because, well, dipping anything in chocolate is always fun!

First gather your supplies: baking sheet, parchment paper (or wax paper), popsicle sticks, and ingredients.

The trickiest part of this recipe is having popsicle sticks on hand. If you have reusable plastic popsicle sticks from a kit, those will work great! Wooden craft sticks are also perfect for this. You could even use chop sticks or plastic cutlery knives. You can also use skewer sticks if you don’t have popsicle sticks but they won’t be quite as sturdy. If you don’t have either, you can cut your bananas into slices. Then use toothpicks in the middle of the banana slices to make chocolate covered banana bites!

  • 10 ounces of chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoon of coconut oil (you may substitute butter or shortening if you like)
  • 6 bananas
  • Toppings such as sprinkles or nuts (optional)

Cover cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Peel bananas and cut in half. Push a popsicle stick into the center of each banana half and place on parchment paper in freezer for at least 50 minutes. Being frozen before you dip the bananas will help the chocolate set up instantly like a magic shell.

When bananas have frozen, prepare melted chocolate with microwave method or stovetop method as described below.

Microwave method:Place chocolate chips and coconut oil into a 16 oz. mason jar or other tall and skinny microwave-safe vessel. A pyrex measuring cup works well for this too. Microwave for 30 seconds. Remove and stir with a dry spoon. Repeat this process until you have a smooth, creamy chocolate dip- about 3 minutes depending on your microwave.

Stovetop method:In a small saucepan, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil and melt over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until you have a thick, smooth mixture. Remove from heat, pour into pyrex measuring cup or heat safe container like a Ball glass canning jar and set aside.

Dip banana in to the chocolate mixture (or use a spoon for a light drizzle) and place onto the parchment paper. If you are wondering how to keep frozen bananas from turning brown, the best method is to cover them completely in chocolate so they won’t be exposed to air.

Sprinkle with toppings if you so desire.

You could eat them as they are right now or freeze them so that the chocolate dip hardens even more.

Place the chocolate covered bananas into the freezer to harden further. If you like them to be completely frozen hard through out, it will probably take another 30 minutes to an hour. At this point, take them out and serve them or wrap them individually in a freezer zipper plastic bag for later use.

You will have leftover melted chocolate which I stored in my ball jar. We used ours up by pouring it over ice cream for homemade sundaes that evening.
