I have never been a real fan of Halloween, but I admit that having kids has made it a little more enjoyable for me! I mean, how could you not like dressing up kids in adorable and snuggly little costumes so they can then go to work improving your candy stash?! I figure, the cuter the costume, the more candy they’ll come home with for me, and that is how this DIY Ice Cream Cone Costume was born. It doesn’t get cuter than this, and Fabric Creations Plush and Soft Fabric Ink made it so easy to make. Keep scrolling to see the full tutorial!

How to make a DIY Ice Cream Cone Costume
Step 1: Apply Fabric Creations Plush to the sweatshirt. Plush from Fabric Creations creates raised, flock-like effects on fabric—adding dimension to fabric, decor, and more. It’s machine-washable after curing and heat-setting, water-based, and non-toxic. I used a stencil to keep the “sprinkles” consistent, but it could also be done freehand if you like more irregular shapes. Use a good thick layer so the plush effect is really noticeable when you heat it later on.
Step 2: Let the sweatshirt dry overnight.
Step 3: Carefully apply heat to the plush paint. I used a heat tool (like one you’d use for embossing), but you can also use an iron. If you use a heat tool, hold it a good distance from the sweatshirt so you don’t burn it. It can take a little time for it to expand, but it will happen! If you use an iron, follow the instructions on the Fabric Creations Plush bottle.
This part is the funnest. I love watching the magic happen here, and LOOK at that awesome dimension! Perfect for the top of an ice cream cone costume.
Now it’s time to make some waffle cone leggings.
Step 4: Use some masking tape to create the first part of the waffle grid. Then, apply Fabric Creations Ink. Fabric Creations is a super soft fabric ink that is the perfect formulation for stamping, stenciling and brushing on fabric. It’s machine washable, water-based, and non-toxic. I mixed the brown and white together to get a slightly lighter brown color. Let dry to the touch (you don’t have to wait too long, so your ink mixture doesn’t dry up).
Step 5: Use tape to create the second part of the waffle grid, and apply the ink. Let dry.
Step 6: And what is a good ice cream treat without a cherry on top? Make a pom-pom using red yarn, stick a green pipe cleaner in it for the stem, and attach it to a headband.
Costume complete! And have you ever seen anything sooooo cute?!
My baby looked even sweeter than ice cream in this darling DIY costume!
