INDIANAPOLIS – After stealing around $2 million worth of Fitbit gadgets from bulk mail orders, a warehouse supervisor from Plainfield received a 15-month federal jail sentence.
Dwight Oliver, a 40-year-old Texan, admitted to mail fraud after the thefts that occurred between June 2021 and September 2022, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
From May 2021 until August 2022, Oliver was a facility supervisor at a warehouse in Plainfield. Which company ran the warehouse was not specified in the court records.
Fitbits valued at nearly $2 million went missing while en route to Amazon fulfillment sites around the county, all while Oliver was working as a supervisor. After conducting an internal investigation, Amazon found out that the gadgets that went missing were “related to large purchase orders that passed through the warehouse where Oliver was employed.”
According to their findings, Oliver began pilfering Fitbits from the distribution center in June of 2021. Oliver further ensured the gadgets’ covert transportation by disabling the GPS trackers in the sprinter vans used for the warehousing. After that, he would pose as an authorised third-party seller on eBay and list the Fitbits for sale.
Oliver made a minimum of $687,000 after deducting the cost of the stolen Fitbits.
Financial crimes can “result in serious consequences,” according to Zach Myers, US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, who made the statement about Oliver’s sentencing.
Many companies in the Southern District of Indiana rely on contemporary logistics and supply chains for their modern eCommerce. Criminals who take advantage of their trusted positions to steal from their employers and clients hurt our economy and drive up prices for everyone,” Myers added.
After getting out of jail, Oliver has a year of supervised release and must pay restitution of $1,435,954.62.
